How to Resize & Crop Your Images

If you have never had to consider file sizes or pixel dimensions before, editing photos can feel a little daunting. However, it is a quick and simple process once you know the basics.

Before we dive into the steps, it helps to understand two important terms:

  • Cropping: This means cutting away the outer edges of a photograph to change its framing or shape—such as trimming a wide rectangle into a neat, symmetrical square.
  • Resizing (Compressing): This means adjusting the digital dimensions (measured in pixels) and file weight (kilobytes) so that your photo loads instantly on The Hive NZ without clogging up the website.

TOP TIP (Why We Ask This): We require all product images to be 1000px square and under 300KB so that our marketplace loads lightning-fast for shoppers and keeps category grids looking clean, tidy, and professional.

1. Save Time: Set Your Camera to Square From the Start

The easiest way to handle image requirements is to avoid editing altogether! Most digital cameras and smartphones allow you to change your frame settings so that every photo you snap is already a square.

Here is how to switch to square mode on the most popular devices:

  • Apple iPhone / iPad (iOS): Open your Camera app, swipe up on the viewfinder or tap the arrow at the top to open the settings menu, and tap 4:3 or the current aspect ratio button until it changes to Square.
  • Samsung / Android Devices: Open your Camera app, look for the aspect ratio icon at the top or side of the screen (it might display as 3:4 or 9:16), and tap it to change the setting to 1:1 (Square).
  • Canon Digital Cameras: Turn on your camera, press the Menu button, navigate to the shooting settings tab, look for Aspect Ratio, and change it from 3:2 to 1:1.
  • Other Devices: If you use a Nikon, Sony, or alternative smartphone brand, a quick Google search for “how to set [your device model] camera to square photos” will show you the exact menu path!

Please Note: Always check your camera settings before photographing a large batch of products. Shooting in square mode saves you hours of post-production cropping later!

2. Cropping Existing Photos on Your Phone

If you already have photos saved on your device that need to be squared up, you can edit them directly without downloading extra apps.

Apple iPhone / iPad

  1. Open your Photos app and tap the product image you want to change.
  2. Tap Edit in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap the Crop icon at the bottom of the screen (it looks like a square framed by rotating corners).
  4. Tap the Aspect Ratio icon in the top-right corner (represented by overlapping rectangles).
  5. Scroll through the shape options at the bottom and select Square.
  6. Drag your finger across the screen to center your product inside the grid, then tap Done.

Samsung / Android

  1. Open your Gallery app and select your product photo.
  2. Tap the Pencil (Edit) icon at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap the Transform / Crop icon.
  4. Tap the Ratio button and choose 1:1.
  5. Position your item neatly inside the square frame, then tap Save.

3. Using PicResize (Free Web Tool for PC or Mac)

If you are working on a computer and want a fast browser-based tool, we recommend PicResize:

  1. Go to the PicResize website, click Browse, select your image file, and click Continue to edit picture.
  2. Step 1 (Crop or Rotate): Use this tool if your image is not yet square.
    • Pro Tip: When you click “Crop Selection”, a square box appears. If you press and hold the SHIFT key on your keyboard while dragging the bottom-right corner with your mouse, the selection box stays perfectly locked into a square shape.
  3. Step 2 (Resize): Choose “custom size” from the drop-down menu, make sure the units are set to pixels, and enter 1000 in both Width and Height fields.
    • Important: If your original photo is smaller than 1000px by 1000px, do not try to force it larger here! Upscaling stretches the pixels and ruins your image quality.
  4. Step 3 (Special Effects): Leave this set to None. Adding novelty filters to product listings is considered poor practice.
  5. Step 4 (Save Format & Size): Ensure the file format is set to JPGJPGJPG / JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) Definition A JPG or JPEG is a standard digital image format used for everyday photos and web graphics. It reduces file sizes by compressing image data, which helps images load quickly online. Explanation Think of a JPG or JPEG as a neatly packed suitcase for your photo. To make the file smaller, some fine details are tightly folded away. Your eyes will rarely notice the difference, and the image still looks great. Because these files are lightweight, your store pages load quickly for shoppers. They are ideal for standard product photos where you do not need transparency., and type 300 into the Max Filesize box to stay within our limits.
  6. Click “I’m Done, Resize My Picture!”, review the final preview window, and click the disk icon to Save to Disk.

4. Using the Free Version of Canva (PC, Mac, or Mobile)

Canva is a versatile free platform that gives you total control over your layout:

  1. Log into Canva and click Create a design.
  2. Select Custom size, enter 1000px for the width and 1000px for the height, then click create.
  3. Upload your product photo and drag it onto the blank square workspace.
  4. Drag the corners of your image until it fills the square frame cleanly.
  5. Click Share > Download, choose JPG as your file type, adjust the quality slider slightly if needed to keep the file under 200KB, and hit Download.

Once saved – and NAMED – your image is ready to upload smoothly onto The Hive NZ marketplace!
